California sues carmakers over global warming

By Michael Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 20 (Reuters) - California sued six of the world's largest automakers over global warming on Wednesday, charging that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have caused billions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit is the first of its kind to seek to hold manufacturers liable for the damages caused by their vehicles' emissions, state Attorney General Bill Lockyer said.

It comes less than a month after California lawmakers adopted the nation's first global warming law mandating a cut in greenhouse gas emissions.

California has also targeted the auto industry with first-in-the-nation rules adopted in 2004 requiring carmakers to force cuts in tailpipe emissions from cars and trucks.

Automakers, however, have so far blocked those rules with their own legal action -- prompting one analyst to say California's lawsuit represents a way for California to pressure car manufacturers to accept the rules.

"That's the objective," said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit organization that provides public research and forecasts about the industry. "They want to get the automakers basically to bow down and pay homage to the (emissions) law."

The complaint, which an auto industry trade group called a "nuisance" suit, names General Motors Corp. , Ford Motor Co. , Toyota Motor Corp. <7203.T>, the U.S. arm of Germany's DaimlerChrysler AG and the North American units of Japan's Honda Motor Co. <7267.T> and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. <7201.T>.

Lockyer told Reuters he would seek "tens or hundreds of millions of dollars" from the automakers in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Northern California.

Environmental groups hailed the lawsuit, saying it represented another weapon for the state as it seeks to curb greenhouse gas emissions and spur the auto industry to build vehicles that pollute less.....

Project Censored Media Democracy in Action:
"Top 25 Censored Stories of 2007"

People in power work to change the world for their benefit.

And while kings, queens, popes, presidents and captains of industry have in the past, made decisions that have killed millions of people, the decisions leaders make today affect the population of the entire planet.

It seems that the only quick way out is something like an Extinction Level Event that disrupts the current social order to such an extent that it has to be rebuilt on a new model. But history has a way of repeating itself [even when it is expressed through fiction.]

This type of solution feeds the energy expressed in the apocalyptic visions of many faith groups who respond "Bring it on!"

Something has to change and soon or it will be to late, if it isn't already.

Just Dance!

I will attend one of these events this fall

Just Dance!

Just Dance is a "positive party" community event. It offers a unique opportunity to dance to an eclectic selection of music from around the world. Held twice a month, Just Dance can be described as a "refreshing alternative" to the bar and club scene. It is an evening where people are free to be themselves... where being, dressing, connecting, and dancing is done however you want it to be!

Letter to editor - U-Pass brings more than 'mayhem' to Vancouver

Important info about riding the bus in Vancouver....

U-Pass brings more than 'mayhem' to Vancouver

Georgia Straight Publish Date: 31-Aug-2006

U-Pass has brought significant benefits and not just overcrowded buses, as some have posited [“U-Pass brings bus mayhem, August 24-31]. Since the Student Society of UBC introduced U-Pass in cooperation with TransLink and UBC, automobile traffic on routes to UBC has declined by over 20 percent and traffic congestion has almost disappeared. Students have reduced their greenhouse-gas emissions by 16,000 tonnes per year [equivalent to 11,520 passenger cars not driven for one year (U.S. figures) - Al] despite an inadequate supply of buses, which has led to severe overcrowding.

Our members use U-Pass on every route in the TransLink system; if the system works for UBC students, it works for people throughout Greater Vancouver.

In initiating U-Pass, the students and administration of UBC have made sustainable transit an indispensable part of daily life. It is now time for the government to invest in public transit so that we may entice others to do so. We need hundreds of new buses on the road to relieve overcrowding and so that U-Pass can be expanded to the colleges.

I love Fatboy Slim II

His music, his videos.

The music stands on its own but when you see his videos Fatboy Slim is even better

Am I rambling? I saw the video "Weapon of Choice" when it first came out in 2000. I only saw it once [no cable] and was pleased to learn that the video won six MTV awards in 2001.

I heard Praise You and read about the video. I thought it was a joke that an dance group would choreograph this tune. And it was. Spike Jonze is the dance troup leader under the pseudonym Richard Koufey. He made the video. In 2001, Praise You was listed as the best video of all time by MTV viewers. Does it still stand up today? I think so. But I'm a fan.

Fatboy Slim - "That Old Pair of Jeans"

I love Fatboy Slim. This is an amazing video of synchronized juggling by Chris Bliss to the music of "That Old Pair of Jeans"

On the passing of poet György [George] Faludy - September 22, 1910 - September 1, 2006

There was a program on CBC television called Program X in the early '70s. I remember watching a performance of one George Faludy's poems. I think the poem was called Ava Luna but I can find no reference to it online.

It starts with the gladiator oath before a fight in the arena: "We who are about to die, salute you." At the time, I was impressed by the visual presentation work of his work.

Anyone with information about his poem or that program is welcome to contact me.
